  • Memories of Place - Old Mutrah Corniche

"Memories of Place" is a visual exploration of Old Mutrah, a historically rich district in Muscat, Oman, known for its role as a major port city and cultural hub. The artwork captures the emotional and architectural essence of the Mutrah Corniche, where tradition, trade, and urban memory converge.

The artist conducted in-depth research using 19th-century newspapers, archival photographs, and early visual records to inform the piece. The work reflects Mutrah’s defining features — weathered forts, traditional buildings, the bustling souq, and the timeless rhythm of coastal life — reimagined through a contemporary lens.

Central to this artwork is the concept of memory: how spaces hold the imprint of human experience and how architecture serves as a vessel for collective identity. Through the use of layered textures, mixed media, and subdued tones, the artist evokes nostalgia while bridging past and present.

Rather than a literal documentation, the piece offers an emotional and symbolic interpretation of Mutrah’s heritage. It honors the district as both a physical place and a repository of cultural meaning. The artwork encourages viewers to reflect on the significance of place, identity, and historical continuity in an ever-changing urban landscape.

This work aligns with the artist’s ongoing interest in themes of memory, identity, and transformation, often grounded in Omani history and personal connection to place. "Memories of Place" is a tribute to the enduring legacy of Old Mutrah and its continued relevance in shaping the soul of Muscat.
